Meekhof issues statement on DFT

LANSING—Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, today issued the following statement regarding DFT protests:

“I am saddened for the children who started the day prepared to learn and I am fed up with the staff who walked out on their responsibilities.  The students of Detroit Public Schools expect classrooms to be safe, consistent learning environments and today their teachers have let them down.

Actions taken today by the members of the Detroit Federation of Teachers demonstrate that they are more interested in politics than they are in education.  Not only have they let down their students, but they are also likely in violation of their contracts.  I expect more from our educators and I know the parents and students of DPS expect more from their teachers.

The Senate, House and Governor are prepared to work to help the students of Detroit Public Schools, it’s too bad their teachers are not.”

LANSING—Senator Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, supported Senate Resolutions 22, 23 and 25 today to prevent the invasion of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes basin.

“Asian Carp has had a significant and detrimental impact on neighboring ecosystems,” said Meekhof. “It’s critical that we work together to prevent the spread of this species to the Great Lakes basin. The impact of Asian Carp on our ecosystems, tourism industry and economy could be severe.”

The resolutions adopted before the Michigan Senate today urge members of Congress and President Obama to evaluate all options, while minimizing the impact on transportation systems, when studying the most effective measures to prevent Asian Carp in the Great Lakes basin.

“These resolutions are an aggressive approach in shutting down the invasion of Asian Carp in the Great Lakes,” said Meekhof. “I look forward to working with the federal government, and our sister states, to enact these procedures and provide a long-term fix to this potentially devastating problem.”
