LANSING— Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, issued the following statement today regarding Gov. Snyder’s fiscal year 2016 budget presentation:
“I commend Governor Snyder for presenting a commonsense financial plan for our state. Not only did he outline a path forward for Michigan, but he also took time to address the current year issues and present thoughtful solutions to resolve our shortfall.
While projected growth was not as robust as we had hoped, our economy is still growing and Michigan families are realizing the effects of sound policies and responsible budgeting. Just as a family must prioritize spending in their household budget, the state must work to meet our obligations, fund taxpayer priorities and make reductions where possible in order to balance the budget.
Going forward, the Senate will continue to focus on policies that promote the goals we established at the start of the term: stimulate job creation and growth; hold government accountable; improve education; and, promote policies that improve the quality of life for all Michiganders.
The budget presentation begins a collaborative process between the legislature and the Governor. The Senate will take time to review the specifics of this plan, communicate with our constituents, and begin the deliberative process of working through the budget and working with the House and the Governor to deliver a comprehensive plan for Michigan well in advance of our October 1st deadline.”
