LANSING—Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, this afternoon issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on state employees:
“The passage of freedom to work legislation in Michigan was intended to give all workers the right to choose whether or not to belong to a union and today the Supreme Court upheld that right for state workers.
This ruling is particularly significant for me as I sponsored the freedom to work legislation. The hard working men and women of Michigan deserve to choose whether or not a union is representing their best interests and state workers are no exception. The men and women who serve the citizens of Michigan should not be required to pay for membership to an organization as a condition of employment; membership is a choice.
Freedom to choose legislation has made Michigan more competitive for economic investment and growth, but most importantly it supports Michigan workers and their ability to choose workplace representation. The ruling today is a great step forward for state workers and for state government.”
